I am the daughter of a small business owner, and now the wife of one, too. I get it. I know how much time it takes, how much energy, how much dedication, and how much sacrifice. I grew up watching my mom work hard every day to provide a nearly flawless service to her clients. I have watched as every employee she brings into the company represents not just her business, but often her family, her reputation, and her sacrifice.
So when my husband came to me and said he wanted to start a business, I was a little hesitant because I know the whole-team effort a small business takes and the sacrifices that are required. At the same time, though, I was excited for him because he’d be getting to live into his dream and ambition the way my mom has gotten to do. He was made for this and I knew he had to take the chance on himself to see where his potential could take him.
Now, I am the daughter and wife of small business owners. I have been surrounded by their drive, passion, dedication, and focus for almost all of my life—and I couldn’t be more proud to be on this journey.
It also means that I guarantee I value what you’re going through. I know that when you put a product or service out with your name on it, you are putting yourself out there, too. It’s vulnerable work. It’s all-encompassing some days. It’s about going to work every day knowing that your family’s livelihood and the livelihood’s of your employees and their families are on the line and on your shoulders.
And so, especially in small businesses, every employee you take on is a necessary risk in order to grow. While it often means less money in your own pocket and more responsibility on your shoulders, if you don’t hire, your business can quickly stagnate and not become what you know it’s capable of being.
